Well, as far as I'm concerned, the only reason she said this is because her father told her Nate had done some abhorant things. Not that Nate did them, but that Fred said so and if Fred says it, it must be true. I too think Shirley is possessed. Her eyes look glassy and glazed over and she smiles everytime she talks about hell or sinners.
