The "New Atheists" have had the courage to speak out and call a spade a spade without honouring the stifling & convenient convention of giving theism a quick excuse from engaging the questions at hand. As you point out, we do not have a quick cheat sheet with all the final answer. This is ultimately a lot more humbling and demands that all of us have reasons and evidence to support what we assert. For this reason alone, Dawkins will never be the atheist Dobson.
