Shirley Phelps-Roper Responds to Richard Dawkins

First, Life Without Faith had the honor of posting Nate Phelps’s follow-up commentary to his American Atheist convention speech. Then we posted Nate’s response to Richard Dawkins as to why Fred Phelps wasn’t in jail. Now, Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of Fred Phelps, and sister of Nate, has responded to us, and specifically Richard Dawkins.

For those of you who don’t know Shirley, here’s a video clip from an appearance on Hannity and Colmes:

Also, her family’s church, The Westboro Baptist Church, maintains several websites including Godhatesfags.com and the newer, BeastObama.com.

Due to the limitations of our comment system, Shirley had to break her letter into several different posts. So I present to you, her response as to why her father isn’t in jail.

The arrogance of this man. Every rebel has a sob story to justify their disobedience. Richard the rebel I’m sure has a story of his own that he would palm off. But alas, you change nothing!

God set his standard in the earth. Fred Phelps was determined to serve God in truth. That means that you spank your children. The truth of the matter is that Nathan Phelps was determined that he would go after mischief and criminal mischief as he grew older, with both hands. A further truth is that the vast majority of his deeds were never known by his dad. The body of his crimes was so big that his closest siblings were left some days in jaw-dropping amazment at what he might think of next to do that he had NO BUSINESS DOING!! By ANY standard, you don’t do the things that Nathan did. I know, I was the next child up from him. I lived up close and had a front row seat to the trauma that was the dark heart of disobedience called Nathan Phelps.

So at the end of the day, you can multiply words and you can call the standards of God cruel, but you are just another rebel that will spend eterntiy in hell.

However, you should STOP lying about these matters. Further, if you truly want an answer to why Fred Phelps is not in jail for properly raising his children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord their God, well – that would be because it is not a crime to do that. Just because you have reached a day where your rebellion is full of over the top fluffy words where you call a spanking child abuse or where you whip out selective memory about events to justify your disobedience, you change nothing. Nathan did leave when he was 18 because he was not going to obey. Good. He had to do that. Then, I bet he left out the part in his little story where he came back.

1 Timothy 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Let us elevate this discussion – here is what we are doing:

Psalm 149:1 Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.
2 Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
3 Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.
4 For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.
5 Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;
7 To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;
8 To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
9 To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.

Now you’re talking!!

It is a common misconception that the Phelps family are a bunch of uneducated hillbillies. Nothing could be further from the truth. Many of them are highly educated lawyers, including Shirley.

Also, many Christians are quick to point out how much they are not like the Phelps clan. While this is a good thing, it should be noted that the Phelps message is very similar to the Hell-Fire and Brimstone preached by the often praised early religious leaders of America.

Many of the modern day concepts like, “God hates the sin, but loves the sinner,” are fairly new and not very Biblical. Even the often quoted John 3:16, “For God so loved the world,” is misrepresented. The Greek word used for “world” in this verse is “cosmos.” A better translation of this saying would be:

“Because (seeing that) God in this way (or manner) loved the cosmos, that he gave his only begotten Son.”

While other verses could be used to back the “God is love” concept, John 3:16 is better applicable to the notion that God was a big fan of Carl Sagan.
